Tom Santley to Lead City Club In 2004

Tom Santley, a resident since 1968 and a member of San Marino City Club since 1974, will serve as its president for 2004.

Santley heads a group of community leaders who will direct all activities of the 430-plus member community organization.

Other officers for 2004 include John Morris (first vice president); ‘Mort’ Mortimer (second vice president); Bill Gunnell (secretary), and Wally Rosvall (immediate past president). These four, plus the president, comprise the executive committee.

Continuing as City Club treasurer is Dennis Kneier, who assumed the responsibilities last year from long-time treasurer ‘Frosty’ Foster. Continuing for a second year on the board is Bert Becker, membership chairman.

New board members include Kent Halkett (arrangements), Fred Y. Chen (school awards, Scout involvement, and invocations), Janet Rogers (social co-chair), David Grimes (social co-chair), and Allan Wolff (sports and group activities).

Santley was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Laguna Beach High School. He received a B.A. degree and an MBA from the University of Southern California. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Santley is a public relations and government relations consultant.

Active in business associations and the community, Santley has served as a board member or president of more than 20 professional and charitable organizations. He has been a board member of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation in Orange County for 22 years. At USC, he has served two terms on the general alumni association board, was president of a business school support group, and president of Cardinal & Gold, a 2,000-plus member organization supporting athletics. Santley was the first chairman of the USC athletics board of counselors and continues on the board today.

Tom and his wife, Perta, have two children who graduated from SMHS and USC. Perta also is a USC graduate. Not surprisingly, Tom is an avid USC fan.

Coincidentally, all five members of City Club’s 2004 executive committee hold at least one degree from USC. John Morris graduated from USC with a BS degree in civil engineering. John owns Morris Water Resources Consultants.

Mort Mortimer received a BA degree in philosophy from Occidental College and received his J.D. from USC School of Law. Mort is a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Bill Gunnell received a BS degree from the University of California-Berkeley and an MBA from USC. Bill is an executive vice president with California Bank & Trusts.

Wally Rosvall received his BA degree from UCLA and his Juris Doctorate from USC. Wally is senior vice president and assistant general counsel - litigation with CB Richard Ellis.

City Club treasurer Dennis Kneier holds a BS degree in accounting and an MBA from Santa Clara University. After a long career as a CPA and partner with Deloitte & Touche, he is now retired.

Continuing board member Bert Becker earned a BS degree from Cal State University Los Angeles and an MBA from USC. Bert is chief financial officer for the Southern California Association of Governments.

Kent Halkett received his undergraduate business degree from the University of California-Berkeley and his law degree from Vanderbilt University. Kent is a lawyer and partner in the litigation department of Miller & Holguin in Century City.

Fred Y. Chen received his BS degree in Taiwan and an MS degree in civil engineering from Stanford University. Fred practiced geotechnical engineering and construction management in California and the Far East for 38 years. He is dissolving his consulting company and now planning retirement.

Janet Rogers graduated from UCLA with a BA degree in American Literature and Culture and is a non-profit consultant.

David Grimes holds BA and MBA degrees from USC. David works for the wealth management and private banking division of Union Bank in Los Angeles.

Allan Wolff received his BS degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He owned a firm that manufactured and distributed medical training devices that helped patients manage arrhythmia. Allan is now retired.

Leadership and direction of City Club’s programs and special events in 2004 appears to be led by a strong and well-educated group of community volunteers.

The next dinner meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17th. City Club will present Mr. Hasan Nouri, president, Rivertech, Inc., a consulting engineering firm. Nouri will speak on "An Insider’s View of Afghanistan."

For information on attending the dinner, contact Dennis Kneier at (626) 578-1109.
