Special Mid-Year Letter from City Club President Tom Santley2004 Off to a Great StartAttendance at all City Club events has increased on a year-to-year comparison. Dinner Meeting attendance has ranged from 123 to 156, and we expect the May Dinner Meeting to be in that range as well. Congratulations and thank-you to First Vice President John Morris for securing such great speakers. A great “Day at the Races” event at Santa Anita Park in March attracted 47 adults and 14 children - a record total of 61. The first race was named for City Club. Special thanks to event chairman Charlie Rogers for his leadership. 2004 Golf Tournament is a SuccessUnder the leadership of Golf Chairman Jack Brown and his 21-member Golf Committee, the 2004 tournament held on May 3 was a success. Fifty-seven golfers braved near-100 degree temperatures, survived, and enjoyed a great dinner at San Gabriel Country Club. Initial scoring by the Pro Shop was a bit off and some golfers were recognized at the dinner in error. Later in the week, all scorecards were reviewed and the final winners were: 2004 Low Gross Scores - Men75 Bert Becker - Champion 76 Doug Haney 78 Alex Garby 79 Bob Hogeboom 80 Frank Haltom 81 Dennis Slattery 2004 Low Net Scores - Men68 Vince Filutze 68 Dennis Slattery 69 Terry Chapman 69 William Tsai 71 Jack Brown 71 Jeff Groseth 71 Harvey Niskala 71 Steve Rogers 2004 Low Gross Scores – Women106 Kate Halkett - Champion 107 Cindy Collins Longest DriveJohn Williams – Men Kate Halkett – Women Closest to the PinRon Louie – Men 3’ 1/2” Kate Halkett – Women 3’ 7” Congratulations to these great competitors and thank-you to all City Club golfers and their guests for participating! Membership Passes 440City Club had 436 members at year-end 2003. Non-renewing members totaled 31 (including, sadly, the death of five members). Primary reason for non-renewal is the ineligibility of individuals who move out of the community. However, despite this loss of members, we have seen more than that join in 2004. Membership now stands at 442. Other City Club NewsImmediate Past President Wally Rosvall is leading a review of City Club’s By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation. Among the changes being considered are adding to the number of Board members and moving the Nominating Committee selection and election process earlier in the year. Main objective is to hold the election of officers and board members in September instead of November. This will allow the new administration to start each calendar year with more forward planning. The final 2003 Community Contribution of $1,250 was presented to the San Marino Schools Foundation at the April meeting. Total contributions for 2003 were $6,721 to 17 community organizations. The odd dollar amount comes from the contribution that supports the Most Valuable Player awards for all high school sports and the Most Valuable Performer awards in the arts programs at SMHS. (In 2003 the trophies and plaques presented totaled $1,221.) The City Club website has been expanded and improved with many color photographs added. Go to www.sanmarinocityclub.org on the Internet and you will find the Club’s Home Page. From there you can explore several options listed on the left-hand side. Special thanks to Kim Halkett, the wife of Board Member Kent Halkett, for her efforts on the website. Summer Fiesta Invitations Coming Soon Tanya and David Grimes have planned another festive evening at El Molino Viejo on Tuesday, June 22. Watch for an invitation in the mail and email reminders and make your reservation early. This “sells out” at about 160-170 people! Let’s keep City Club moving forward throughout 2004!
