Special Mid-Summer Letter from City Club President Tom SantleyAugust 24, 2004Plans Complete for Remainder of 2004The September, October, and November Dinner Meetings are set. Joining us for the traditional outdoor barbecue at Southwestern Academy will be USC Coach Mick Haley. Mick led the USC Women’s Volleyball Team to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2002 and 2003. The 2003 team finished a perfect season undefeated at 35-0, only the fourth time that has happened in NCAA Women’s volleyball history. Mick Haley has a 27-year coaching career including three seasons at USC, 17 years at Texas, seven years at Kellogg Community College, and four years as coach of the U.S.A. Women’s National Team and a fourth-place finish in the 2000 Olympics.Coaches and selected players from the SMHS Football and Girls’ Volleyball teams will be invited as City Club guests to attend the September meeting. The dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Southwestern Academy. A delicious dinner will be prepared by a specialty BBQ caterer. Mark your calendars now and watch for a bulletin in early September. Congressman David Dreier (R-26) will be featured at the Tuesday, October 19 dinner to be held at Huntington Middle School. Coming only two weeks before the November 2 National Election, his remarks should be most interesting at our October meeting. The Tournament of Roses has notified us that City Club again will present the Queen & Court at the November Dinner Meeting. This will be the 32nd consecutive year that City Club has presented the Royal Court. This is always a great opportunity to bring daughters and granddaughters to meet the ladies of the court. The date is set - Tuesday, November 16. Mark your calendars now. Annual Tennis Tournament SetSpecial Events Chairman Allan Wolff has set Sunday, October 24 at the Lacy Park tennis facility for the Annual City Club Tennis Tournament for men and women. Locate that tennis racket and those fine tennis togs, unhinge that swing, and get in some practice. Allan Wolff and his committee promise that all players will enjoy a fun day! 11 New Members to be Inducted at September DinnerSince our May dinner meeting, City Club Board Members and others have been busy securing applicants for membership from the many community leaders in San Marino. New members to be introduced in September include Matt Ballantyne, Todd Doney, James Gorton, George Banks, Caroline Blauvelt, Jeff Graubart, Linda Graubart, Margrith Jaeggi, Mary E. Suzy Moser, Tim Wright, and Jason Watson. Please welcome these new members when you see them at future meetings. Urge Friends & Neighbors to Join City ClubCity Club has accepted 44 new members in 2004 and membership now stands at 452. While this is very good compared to this date in 2003 (423 members) and 2002 (414 members), our community organization would like to grow to 460-470 by the end of the year. Call Membership Chairman Bert Becker at (626) 441-3414 for an application to pass along to your friends and neighbors. Or call Bert and give him the name of your prospect and Bert or members of the Membership Committee will take it from there. Let’s continue to make 2004 a successful year for City Club. See you in September. Tom Santley 2004 City Club President |
