City Club Contributes Over $11,000

City Club Contributes over $11,000 to the Community

San Marino City Club announced that its 2004 contributions program totaled $11,403 with cash support to more than 20 community organizations.  In addition, an in-kind contribution of about $1,000 was made to Huntington Middle School to install speakers in the cafeteria ceiling for City Club Dinner Meetings.

Major cash recipients were the Rotary Club Centennial Clock project ($2,000 Platinum Level gift); continuation of City Club’s decades old-support for the MVP trophies for boys and girls varsity sports at SMHS ($1,873); and the San Marino Schools Foundation ($1,250).  The new Chinese Garden at The Huntington Library will receive a $1,000 gift from City Club at its January 18, 2005 Monthly Dinner.

According to 2004 City Club president Tom Santley, “By carefully managing our financial resources, we were able to increase our support in the community to a record level.  We enjoyed increased membership in City Club and eliminated most postal mailings by using email to communicate with members.  This last move saved over $4,000.”

“Our social event and sports event chairs did a great job, did not lose any money, and even turned a small profit – which is quite a feat when you have a party for 180 people,” Santley added.

City Club made additional $500 payments on $2,500 pledges to the San Marino Public Library fund drive and to San Marino Historical Society for the Thurnher House Project.  The Old Mill Foundation received $380.

Among other recipients, Boy Scout Troops 351, 355, and 358 received a total of $400.  SMHS Football Booster Club, girls’ athletics, and the 2004 Grad Night received $900.

Southwestern Academy received $200 and smaller contributions were made to the Huntington Middle School Annual Breakfast and the San Marino Junior Tennis Tournament.

According to Santley, “The 2004 Board of Directors recognized that the City of San Marino will celebrate its Centennial in the year 2013.  With that in mind, the Board has initiated a reserve fund for City Club’s participation in the City Centennial in 2013.  The Board set aside $2,000 and, if future Club operations allow similar gifts, the Club will have $10,000 or more reserved for whatever 2013 City Centennial project the Club chooses to support.”

City Club membership reached 467 in 2004, up from 439 in 2003 and 421 in 2002.  “On behalf of the board of directors, I thank each member for participating in our monthly dinners and special events and helping us achieve this high level of financial contributions to the San Marino community,” Santley concluded.
